Upcycling Windsurf Sails

During my internship at Shakes Bkk we worked with the windsurfing brand COBRA to find a way of upcycling waste materials generated in their manufacturing process. The scenario was focused on beach lounge facilities.

About COBRA

COBRA, a privately held group of companies, is a Thailand based composites manufacturer with its core business in the Watersports market. COBRA is recognised as a world leader in the manufacture of high quality composites products, renowned for premium Windsurf, SUP, Kite and Surf boards.

Ideation

We started our ideation by sketching and building small-scale prototypes with the real waste material we received from COBRA. The process involved a lot of hands-on work and improved our sowing skills. We started using different patterns and tried new ways of combining the different materials.

Concept Development

We developed three concepts based on the material samples we received from COBRA. All three concepts are focusing on durability, portability and comfort.

This was the first time I started a design process from the material side. It was challenging to work within the restrictions given by the material and have a real-world scenario to design for. Working with waste materials was a rewarding experience.
